To achieve its vision and mission, the Commission is mandated to undertake the following:

Set in place programmes of action to prevent, combat and eradicate the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons.

Sensitize the public on the dangers associated with the proliferation, illegal possession and wrong use of small arms, and provide guidelines on the need to hand over illegally held arms.

Educate the public on the need for peace building for economic and socio-political development and encourage non-violent resolution of conflicts.

Mobilise and sensitize communities on the negative impact of illicit production of arms.

Advise the appropriate authorities on the formulation of policies and strategies on the Code of conduct for the implementation of the Moratorium on small arms, which is now a Convention.

Advise the Minister of the Interior on the issue and possession of small arms.

Co-ordinate the efforts of the security institutions to deal with the small arms menace and also establish a centralized filing system on small arms.

Liaise on a permanent basis with the ECOWAS Secretariat on relevant issues relating to proliferation of small arms and light weapons in general.
